Six-time world champion Steve Davis has withdrawn from the Bahrain GP at the 11th hour citing medical reasons for his no show in the Middle East.

Six-time world champion Steve Davis has withdrawn from the Bahrain Snooker Championship at the 11th hour citing medical reasons for his no show in the Middle East.

The 51-year-old has been suffering from an ear infection and his withdrawal means Welshman Dominic Dale has been handed a bye into the quarter-finals in the Gulf.

Dale beat Hong Kong’s Marco Fu in the opening round on Sunday evening, before admitting: “We were both very nervous because we were expecting Steve to withdraw. We were basically expecting it to be a match for a place in the quarter-finals.”

World number one Ronnie O’Sullivan recovered from a shaky start to beat Liang Wenbo 5-2 in the first round of the Royal London Watches Grand Prix. After losing the opening two frames O’Sullivan won the next five and finished in style with a century break.

World champion Ronnie O’Sullivan found his stunning top gear to crush Stoke underdog Dave Harold 9-3 and claim the Northern Ireland Trophy in Belfast. In doing so “The Rocket” became the first player for four years to win back-to-back ranking titles.

World number 28 Harold won the opening frame of the match, but O’Sullivan, 32, raced into a five-frame lead.

After recording the 21st ranking title of his career, in which he posted breaks of 68, 103, 84, 76, 64 and 50 to triumph, O’Sullivan played down his performance.

Ronnie O’Sullivan reached the final of the Northern Ireland Trophy with a 6-5 victory over Ali Carter in a quality match that could have gone either way. Stoke qualifier Dave Harold reached the final of the Northern Ireland Trophy with an upset 6-4 victory over two-times world champions John Higgins.
