The euphoria for New Zealand after the two Twenty20 victories has been swiftly put to rest by the sparkling performances of India’s batsmen in the four ODIs so far. The pre-tour talk centred around how the Indians will be challenged in conditions alien to them, but the only time they have been stretched so far was in the Twenty20 games. New Zealand’s bowlers have struggled to find the right lengths to contain India’s intimidating top order, let alone pick wickets. The quality of the pitches and sizes of the grounds have also played into India’s hands and that has deprived the series of any kind of competition.

Both India and New Zealand have entertainers in their batting line-ups but the rainy weather in Napier and Wellington ensured that their performances were curtailed. The first ODI was a one-sided 28-over game, which India won by 53 runs, and the second got no further than 28.4 overs. Sunday’s forecast says there’s a 20% chance of precipitation in Christchurch. Hopefully it will leave enough time to squeeze in a 50-over contest.

As expected, India shrugged off the Twenty20 aberration to hand New Zealand a heavy defeat in the first ODI. The hosts have to do all the running now. The pitch looks slow and is not expected to assist seam movement. Virender Sehwag has already said that if India’s batting clicks, they can score 300 in every game. Even so, New Zealand couldn’t have chosen a better venue to level the series. It’s their favourite venue and Daniel Vettori said his players feel very comfortable playing here.
