Bangladesh levelled the series with their seven-wicket win on Thursday but after one comprehensive win apiece the outcome of the third game in the year’s third series between the two teams is still difficult to predict. Zimbabwe were buoyant after winning the series opener by five wickets and gave the impression they had turned the corner following a revamped domestic setup and the influx of former players into coaching and administrative roles. Their ultimate goal is a return to playing Tests again and a series wrap in Bangladesh will be a step in the right direction.

Bangladesh entered the series as clear favourites but were shocked by an improving Zimbabwe in the first one-dayer on Tuesday. Their captain, Shakib Al Hasan, remains confident his team is strong enough to pocket the series 4-1 and has demanded a better performance from his top order. A familiar early collapse cost Bangladesh; they crumbled to 62 for 6, a position from which it was almost impossible to salvage a victory.
Zimbabwe arrived full of confidence after knocking over Kenya 4-1 in a one-day series, and on the back of Elton Chigumbura’s superb all-round performance coasted to victory with more than 15 overs to spare. Their strength is in the batting; the return of Tatenda Taibu after a lengthy absence lends solidity of the middle-order, which includes the talented pair of Charles Coventry and Brendan Taylor. Add to that, Hamilton Masakadza, the second highest run-getter in ODIs this year, and Chigumbura, who has hit more ODI sixes in 2009 than everyone but Chris Gayle, and it looks a reliable unit.

Another format and another chance for England to register their first international win of the winter? Don’t hold your breath. Barring their series win against South Africa last summer they haven’t been much good at one-day cricket for a long time and are facing a West Indies side full of energy and confidence. England don’t have a settled opening pair or a settled bowling attack and are forever experimenting to try and find a combination that works. It all fell flat in the Twenty20 as they were comprehensively thumped and the guessing game is set to continue.

West Indies have far fewer issues to worry about and are hoping to be boosted by the return of Chris Gayle after his hamstring injury. During their struggles in recent years the 50-over variety has provided the occasional moment of success as their deficiencies weren’t exposed in the shorter format. Their top order can match any for destructive qualities, while Dwayne Bravo’s availability boosts all departments. The collection of useful spinners and medium pacers are ideally suited to the slow surfaces that are now common and the fielding continues to show marked improvement. It hasn’t been said very often of late, but West Indies start as clear favourites.

India’s quest for a first Test series win in New Zealand in 41 years began with Mahendra Singh Dhoni winning the toss and deciding to bowl at Seddon Park. Munaf Patel edged out L Balaji for the third seamer’s spot, while Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman returned to the fray after playing no part in the one-day series. New Zealand left out Brent Arnel and Jeetan Patel, and there was a debut for Martin Guptill.

India won the one-day game here at a canter, with Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir going berserk, but this was a different proposition. They hadn’t even won a Test in New Zealand since 1975-76 and Amit Mishra, the second spinner, was left out in favour of the additional seamer in conditions that were certain to be far more pace-friendly. The onus was on Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma to vindicate Dhoni’s decision to buck conventional wisdom and bowl first.
