Bolton lightweight Amir Khan is likely to return to the ring in June and then fight for a world title later in 2009, according to promoter Frank Warren.

Khan beat Marco Antonio Barrera via a fifth-round technical stoppage on Saturday (14th March, 2009) at Manchester’s MEN Arena. Barrera, 35, suffered a cut to the forehead in the first round of the fight at the MEN Arena and fought virtually with one eye until referee Dave Parris called a halt to proceedings after taking advice from the ringside doctor. However, Khan was well on top at the time and afterwards declared that he had found the former three-weight world champion an “easy” opponent.

Roach, who trains Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao, described Khan’s victory as the “first step on the road to greatness”.

David Haye announced his arrival in the heavyweight division with a stunning fifth-round knockout of Monte Barrett.

The Briton, fighting for the first time since moving up from cruiserweight, had his American rival on the canvas four times before finishing the job. The Londoner was knocked down himself at the start of round five before a lethal combination ended the fight. Haye now hopes to challenge either Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko for one of their world titles early next year.

Vitali was ringside to watch Haye demolish veteran Barrett, and the manner of the victory would have given the Ukrainian food for thought ahead of a possible fight next year. Haye, who now holds a record of 22-1 (21 KO), was delighted with his win, insisting Barrett has been a dangerous opponent. “He’s a quick heavyweight, but my speed told,” said Haye. “He definitely came to win and put me down with a good shot.
